Chorus:
Oh, poor old Dicey Reilly she has taken to the sup,
Poor old Dicey Reilly she will never give it up,
It’s off each morning to the pub
And then she’s in for another little drop,
Oh, the heart to the rule has Dicey Reilly.
A new Irish-themed pub has just opened in Pattaya and Mick and I were invited to visit recently. The name is, Dicey Reilly’s and it is the latest reincarnation from the previous Moore Sports Bar. Under the direction of an Irishman hailing from County Sligo, Cathel Brett (Cat), he makes sure “the craic” is great and the welcome Gaelic. The name of the pub is unusual so we “googled it” and were enlightened to learn it is an old Irish traditional drinking song. If you’d like to listen to it you can hear The Dubliners give it their special rendition on You Tube. It’s a great video clip full of Irish charm and atmosphere.
The interior renovation retains the huge hospitable bar but with more comfy seating, fourteen TV screens, two pool tables, a new band stand which is the scene for live music Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights from 8.00 pm till midnight. (Lee Shamrock is also scheduled to perform). The walls are decorated with unique pictures of Celtic women whose exploits during the Viking invasion became legendary and conferred their reputation as fearsome warriors and romantic heroines. The result is a friendly, contemporary entertainment destination with a laid-back ambiance and Gaelic vibes.
Cat told us that a unique forthcoming attraction will be the arrival of a 5 metre long shuffle board. For the uninitiated (like us) players use broom-shaped paddles to push pucks down a narrow court into the scoring area. The menu features good, honest pub grub with an Irish twist plus a small selection of Thai dishes, There is a variety of draft and bottled beers enough to satisfy the most discerning of imbibers. Through soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and beef stews to pizzas and deserts it’s all here on Dicey Reilly’s menu.
Sandwiches feature the classic BLT, priced at B.199 with lots of other choices including sausage, egg and bacon, grilled ham and cheddar cheese, plus the classic club and warm baguettes. Dicey’s bacon and cheese burger is B.240 and pizzas range from B.199. Incidentally, all prices are inclusive of government tax with service at your discretion.
We ordered Irish beef and potato stew plus pan fried liver with bacon and onions. Both arrived quicker than an Irish smile and were served in substantial portions. Mick praised the tenderness of the beef and the gutsy full flavour while my liver serving was packed with perfect crispy vegetables and a rich gravy. Other main courses featured on Dicey’s menu include fish and chips, bangers and mash, scampi and chips, spaghetti either bolognaise or carbonara, salmon steak, cottage pie or Australian rib eye to name just a few. We enjoyed a couple of glasses of the house wine (B.130) or it is available by the carafe for B.340 plus they have a first rate selection of good labels from around the world. Kilkenny and Guiness are naturally available (also Fosters and Tetley’s draft) and an excellent original Irish cider from Co. Tipperary called, Magners. The perfect quaff on a hot Pattaya day to enjoy with a bite or two.
The promotion special on the night we visited was a B.120 all-you-can-eat chicken tenders, crispy fried cod fillets, sausages, and mini pizzas. Dicey Reilly’s hadn’t been open very long when we visited and Cat let us know that more promotions are coming together with extra traditional Irish fare including an authentic Dublin breakfast. Situated directly on Second Road in full view of all, this new Irish pub will surely gain a place amongst Pattaya’s locals.
