Nightmare! It is a trail to know what to eat for the best if you love to go out to and socialise. In Pattaya the night life can be so important for the perfect evening, for most of us to find the correct setting. It is a personal choice.

Thinking of what we would like to eat, drink, and wear and how to style your hair and match your make up plus thinking about which aftershave or perfume to put on. The company we choose for the liaison to take place. Going out is not so easy! Your planning and preparation are essential.

At times, when you would like a quiet romantic mood or a sombre setting, being near to water or the sea is at times just what the Dr. ordered, it is lovely to see the sun set or look at the view, watch the waves and listen to them crash onto the shoreline. You are lost in your thoughts, or remember an event which has happened, sad or happy, perhaps even about to happen. The sea just soothes you in ways you may have not thought of. I love to watch the sea and the sun …until the sun disappears beneath the horizon, letting the darkness slowly appear.

One of my favourite places to visit is at Jomtien; this place is so lovely and special. Cabbages and Condoms, what a wonderful name! In the entrance of the restaurant there are a few manikins standing, their outfits made from contraceptive pills and condoms. They are great to see, the owner leaves condoms on the side near the toilets. He believes in sex education, which is also taught at his chosen school. This is his charity sponsored by Cabbages and Condoms. He wants to educate the future generation properly about such topics as safe sex and HIV, and give Thailand’s young people a chance for a better future.

This is a special place with the loveliest of views, seen from very many different terraces, where you can be even more private. It is as if you were sitting on top of an old ships wooden mask looking outwards to sea. The setting is perfect, it is an open air restaurant with tiny lanterns hanging and blowing in the winds. The staff are so attentive. Should you choose to eat from its varied menu, you would not be disappointed. Whilst ordering you are surrounded by greenery it is simply relaxing.  Walking around its lovely gardens or down onto the beach is a treat in its self. We have stayed here on special occasions. Each apartment is private with not a soul looking onto you, so perfect!

At times it is essential to get out of Pattaya and find peace in your life! If you live here you do not always want to feel you are a tourist and that there are residential people residing amongst the madding crowd.

Another lovely restaurant is on the roof of Royal Garden, it is quaint, not expensive, and has a panoramic view of the bay. You purchase your ticket and walk around choosing your dish from any of the kiosks, viewing the food cooking. I tend to meet my friends here because it is local and out of the way from the crazy traffic and people rushing about their business. For younger people, such as my daughter, this is ideal, as after you can shop and chill in its many outlets with your mates, visit the cinema or go into its haunted house. “Beware! You may not come out.

Of course if you are feeling extravagant and would like to treat your partner then go to the Sugar Hut. It is tucked away at the top of Thappraya Road. It is nestled in lush tropical exotic greenery. You would be hard pushed to know it was there, as outside its entrance are the road works which are forever taking place. Mad baht buses whizzing up and down the hill either side of it, in a very crazy Pattaya. You sit in oriental style on the floor on huge cushions to eat at low tables or they have a beautiful restaurant.

This has no actual glass at the windows, only huge green tropical leaves to gaze through, tranquillity at its best. Tropical birds and Toucans set the tone of the relaxed meal which is set to take place. There is also the hotel for you to stay after your lengthy meal.

The service is outstanding the staff graceful and smiling at you, the best service in town ensures you enjoy your time spent there for an evening or a long stay.

For a more social and entertaining night, you can go to Bali Hi Pier, get the tut tut or simply walk along the pier. Go down the first right hand steps onto the motor boat free of charge to the Floating restaurant. It is fine, once off boat you have to walk up the stairs, I suggest if you are not prepared for stairs then get to the gym it is a mountain climb! Once up the stairs you will be high above the Pattaya sky line looking at the shore and the huge lights of the sign that reads PATTAYA.

On the passenger ferry you can eat from the running buffet or order from the menu, whilst enjoying the live entertainment. Listening to singing or watch dancing from the Russian dancers, you may even be invited to dance in front of the audience; afterwards you can have your photo taken with them. Wonderful!

I do believe there are many hidey holes to be had; certainly where I live it is quaint, even though at the moment Mapbrachan Lake is getting smaller by the day, soon to disappear if we do not have sufficient rain. The lake has many lovely eating places, such as The Lake side, The Fisherman’s, The Rendezvous and The Outback Bar. All have a good atmosphere and varied menus offering Indian, Thai and English cuisine.

There are many places outside of Pattaya and this side of Sukhumvit that you can explore, even going towards Bangsarry. Just have fun, take a chance and explore, perhaps I will hear from you and come and visit your favourite haunts.

Unfinished Business by Ranting Rosie

Pattaya seems to be heading many projects at the moment, combating the drainage systems, making new wider roads and forever tidying up and revamping Jomtiem. It is crazy; Pattaya seems to look more like a war zone, particularly in the area behind immigration in Sio 5. I was there not long along trying to park my car outside the Seven Eleven; I could not actually walk onto a safe piece of pavement that had not been lifted by a digger to get below ground level.

I am not sure how the residents of Jomtiem feel, especially as most have purchased their condos to live in for residential purposes or for holidays. I was thinking of some years back when I had visited Malta, it was a like being in a blitz area, unfinished business everywhere. Whilst it has been a good idea to widen the roads of Siam Country Club, I am not sure why it has been done as nobody is actually driving on that part of the extended road; the lines have yet to be moved!

The drainage system has still not been sorted properly along Nurnplubwharn. The road was ripped up and sewage systems were laid, but still they do not manage the rains. Yesterday again we had so much rain, the water was rushing upwards out of the drain cover, it is so unpleasant… also it must be a health hazard, You could smell the sewage pushing its way up. The idea of storm drains come to mind… and probably would be a good investment. Place the normal drains alongside the storm drains to take the sudden downpour of unexpected rains away, and have a pipe system so that the excess rain water heads towards the reservoir! In Singapore, huge storm drains which are not littered with rubbish and greenery are made of concrete solely for the purpose of rushing unexpected excess water.

The main road of Sukhumvit is a nightmare, unavoidable with the work that has to be done, causing a traffic nightmare. Residents and tourists who are all here together are wondering when Pattaya is actually going to start looking like it is finished, with constant shops being built and new condos along the beach front.. It is endless. What would be very nice, the local authority of Pattaya should visit Munich in Germany, every building is covered in greenery… it is very environmental and soft looking and calming. Trees dot the roads their branches spread out providing shade and coolness. Also they would absorb the fumes from the hundreds of vehicles in and around Pattaya. Pattaya seems to be a huge concrete jungle, heading towards more expansion and nil consideration for its own environment.
