All-Day Dining at Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya

If you haven’t already visited Centara Grand Mirage – be prepared to be impressed! This extraordinary hotel is Pattaya’s first unique, themed hotel and it is a remarkable feat of architectural engineering and innovative design concepts. The hotel is created as two soaring 18-storey towers connected by sky bridges and set on the fine sands of Wong Amat Beach. The exterior boasts its own jungle, water park, monsoon island, river, waterfalls, water sports, boating, fishing and kayaking, while the interior décor is a dwarfing experience of towering wooden columns, rock-clad walls and colossal contemporary works of art. The design is truly titanic in its conception.
Centara Grand Mirage prides itself on its coterie of speciality restaurants and bars. Flames is a beachfront BBQ and grill, Coast a trendy Beach Bar & Grill, Waves hits the cocktail scene, Ginger and Lime has a Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese menu, while Acqua serves contemporary Italian cuisine. However, Mick and I had been invited to Oasis, the resort’s all-day dining outlet.
This restaurant is huge, having just undergone a major renovation that has increased the seating by almost 100 and it now boasts 288 outdoor seats with 192 inside. Ditto the menu – it’s huge – with eight pages of imaginative food items to satisfy the hungriest during its 17-hour opening times.
Chef Romand from Germany and his brigade produce some extraordinary combo plates whether it be surf, turf, fish or fowl. For instance “the Big Catch” sharing plate offers half a superior Phuket lobster, grilled snow fish, tiger prawn and a leg of king crab for B.2,400 or for the meatier type a mixed grill sharing plate consists of a free-range chicken, Australian lamb chop and a chorizo sausage for B.720. Sausage lovers would be more than content with the Artisan Sausage Platter laden with grilled lamb, pork and beef sausages plus an Italian spicy version and the famous flavour-loaded Chiang Mai sausage.
Chef had prepared us “Fall off the Bone” slow roasted beef short ribs accompanied by new potatoes and fresh vegetables. The succulent, juicy meat (which had been marinated for 24 hours) did indeed fall away from the bone and had been smothered in their signature mesquite wood BBQ sauce which was simply sensational. Sweet but tangy with suspicions of some intriguing ingredients (he did hint at Coca-Cola!), it should definitely be bottled – we’d certainly buy a dozen bottles or two. Do try this dish; it is certainly one of the standout dishes on the menu and you’ll love that BBQ sauce.
For fish lovers there’s steamed snow fish, pan-seared barramundi and that everyday staple, fish and chips. We were served a fishy appetiser of seared sesame-crusted tuna loin accompanied by squares of watermelon, feta cheese and Japanese seven spices. It was another star dish, the sweet fruit and the tart cheese provided a sensational backdrop to the delicate barely seared tuna.
Lots more on the menu, subs and sandwiches, 200-gram Wagyu burgers and a house surf ‘n’ turf special embracing half a Canadian lobster loaded with a grilled Australian sirloin steak and onion hoagies, including every Italian’s favourite, penne with Italian spicy sausage. There’s a big Thai menu and a considerable Indian menu featuring prawn vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh and more. Don’t leave without sampling the chocolate lava cake, it’s a decadent chocolate volcano oozing with its molten surprise.
Buffets are always a fun way to enjoy an evening meal sampling the profusion of delights laid out before you. Oasis excels in presenting its weekly Saturday Night Seafood Bonanza including every conceivable shellfish and succulent seafood. From 6:30 to 10:30 pm at a price of B.1,099++ your world is literally your oyster to wander to and from enjoying the polar freshness of it all plus there’s even a live circus show to entertain everyone.
