The Spanish tapas culture has truly captured the imagination of the culinary world. Originally tapas were snacks, small treats to titillate the palate before lunch or dinner, enjoyed with an aperitif or two. There are many stories about the origin of tapas but the one we are partial to is the yarn about King Alfonso. According to legend he had rested for the night in the town of Ventorillo del Chato in the southern province of Cadiz where he ordered a glass of Jerez or sherry. As a gusty wind was blowing, the inn keeper had placed a slice of ham over the glass to prevent dust from infesting the sherry. The king liked the taste so much that when he ordered his second glass he requested another tapa or “cover” just like the first.

Of course tapas these days have morphed into canapés, finger food and even small meals and are enjoyed in wine bars and restaurants alike. Pullman Pattaya is continually devising exciting promotions (with very economical pricing) to attract their customers and their latest adventure is entitled “Bodega Festajar” (Wine Festival) which will run until the end of March.

Wednesday evenings from 7 to 10 at the Pool Bar is the stunning locale for their latest gastronomic adventure.  The dynamic sounds of Santos, the Spanish musician, filled the air on arrival and the atmosphere was febrile with Mediterranean charisma and enjoyment. Thierry, the executive chef, promises, “you won’t leave Bodega without a full tummy and happy” so with this in mind we were more than ready to enjoy their latest tapas fiesta.

Before we tell you about the attractive culinary items we must tell you the very attractive price for this special Spanish buffet party. Hold on to your sombreros- – it’s only B.699 net for the full fiesta plus free flow red and white wine, sangria or draught beer. The setting is chic and glamorous beside the pool; high stooled cocktail tables afford casual dining while the stylish tables and rattan armchairs on the beach provide sinking comfort and elegance.

Plates in hand we set forth to taste the European delicacies. First to tempt was the superb selection of cured meats and salads. All the salamis were impeccably sourced however the chorizo proved our favourite, it was wonderful, a fiery smoked salami redolent with paprika and cayenne. Shot glasses were packed with juicy marinated vegetables, plus olives and pickles juxtaposed with fat New Zealand mussels, homemade pate and terrines, stuffed tomatoes, tuna egg mayonnaise and garbanzos dressed with vinaigrette and topped with fish fillets. Molten cheese croquettes and a generous cheese board crammed with eight select cheeses and delicious desserts all vied for our selection. Chef Thierry personally mans the live cooking station, tossing garlic prawns in Ricard for a delicious seafood plate. The sangria was refreshing, the house wine excellent, the setting perfect and the music evocative of Mediterranean nights.  The fiesta was continuing as we climbed the steps on our way home after a night of feasting and yes, chef, our tummies were full and we were happy!

The Beach Club restaurant here at Pullman Pattaya Hotel G offers daily promotions, all at exceedingly reasonable prices. Every Monday evening Chef Wut’s wok cooks up five local Asian dishes served with a multitude of fresh toppings including masala sweet and sour, black pepper, curry and lots more for B.399.  Tuesday night is their astounding KORT Night from 6:30 till 10 (KORT coming from “Knights of the Round Table”) when a gastronomic 4-course set menu is served at B.655 net. Wednesday night’s promotion is called “Fisherman’s Catch” featuring a range of seafood dishes including lobster, blue river shrimps, tiger prawns and crabs cooked in a myriad of ways. Thursday is Mediterranean Buffet night for B.700 net which brings us to Friday and Saturday evenings when they offer their popular Seafood Buffet at B.988 net or B1,188 net with half a bottle of wine.
