Banglamung Police Officers were recently called out to a disturbing double-suicide in a house in Soi 16, off Naklua Road. The officers were directed to a first floor bedroom where the couple had been discovered.
The dead couple, Mr. John McMahon, a 73 year old English man, and his 56 year old Thai wife, Khun Nuansawat, had been discovered lying on their bed by the couple’s housemaid, Khun Lamyai aged 37. Also found lying on the floor of the bedroom was the couple’s pet dog.
The windows and door of the bedroom had been sealed using masking tape, whilst containers of burning coals had been placed around the room; it is thought at this stage that the couple, and their pet dog, died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Discovered next to the bed was a suicide note, in Thai, which had been signed by Khun Nuansawat, and explained that after the couple’s business had failed, they had been unsuccessful in selling their home to pay off the debtors. Their accountant, Khun Sirat, was instructed to sell their home and pay off all their debts, with any residual monies being retained by Khun Sirat.
At the scene it appeared that it was a double suicide, with no suspicious circumstances, however, police will await the post mortem results before closing the case.
The British Embassy in Bangkok has been notified of the death and is offering consular assistance to the family of Mr. and Mrs. McMahon at this time.
