Somboon, a Burmese waiter in a Russian restaurant, was en route to the Wat Chai market when he was stopped by four men dressed like police. They asked him why a foreigner was working in Pattaya but he assured them he had an up-to-date work permit. He was instructed to get into a white pick-up. He was then driven around town before being released in Jomtien.
The ersatz police officers said they were letting him go as they had found nothing wrong and no evidence of drugs. However, they stole 4,000 baht from his wallet. Somboon, who works in the Bali Hai area, reported the incident to police, who have launched a full-scale investigation.
