An Iranian man was arrested at Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport for smuggling nearly 3.2 kg of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice,” worth over Bt13 million (nearly US$394,000), into the kingdom.
Director-General of Customs Somchai Sujjaponse told a news conference that Mohammad Khoshkelikoundoghdi, 36, was arrested at the international arrivals terminal in Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The suspect, en route from Iran to Thailand by Turkish Airlines, arrived in the kingdom on Monday.
After being tipped off that the suspect planned to smuggle the drugs, customs officials pierced his baggage and found the crystal meth covered hidden in a specially-made compartment in the baggage.
The Iranian national confessed that he was hired for a thousand US dollars to send the drugs to a middleman in Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek area.
In another drug-related seizure, Thai customs officials impounded boxes of 15kg shirts which were coated with opium, worth Bt2.5 million (nearly US$76,000).
The postal boxes, seized at the Suvarnabhumi Airport post office, were sent from a neighbouring country to European countries and USA.
Officials also seized seven kilos of dried marijuana, worth Bt450,000 (over $13,000), as well as 20,000 diazepam tablets, valued at Bt 2 million (about $60,000).
In addition, the authorities seized cylinders containing 14,000 kg of LPG, worth Bt720,000 (nearly US$22,000) in Sa Kaeo province being smuggled to neighbouring Cambodia.
