12 imported cases from six countries

Twelve new cases of novel coronavirus infection were reported on Saturday, all arrivals from six countries who were in quarantine, raising the total to 4,192.

The new cases were from Germany (1), Sweden (1), the United Kingdom (1), Bahrain (7), India (1) and Kuwait (1), the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said.

For the first time in more than a week, there were no reports of new cases originating in the Myanmar border town of Tachilek, which has been linked to 49 infections among Thais since the start of the month.

The case from Germany was a Thai singer who arrived on Nov 28 and stayed at a state quarantine facility in Chon Buri. On Dec 9, he tested positive with no symptoms.

The case from Sweden was a self-employed Swedish man, 37, in transit from Turkey. He arrived on Dec 4 and stayed at an alternative state quarantine facility in Samut Prakan province. On Wednesday, he tested positive with no symptoms.

The case from the UK was a 19-year-old Thai student in transit from the United Arab Emirates. She arrived on Dec 6 and stayed at a state quarantine facility in Bangkok. On Dec 9, she tested positive with no symptoms.

The seven cases from Bahrain were Thai women who arrived on the same flight on Sunday. One of them had a history of being infected last month — a 31-year-old worker who had a headache. She tested positive again on Thursday.

The six others from Bahrain were a 23-year-old housewife, a 33-year-old masseuse, a 35-year-old masseuse, a 39-year-old worker, a 41-year-old babysitter and a 51-year-old worker. They tested positive on Dec 9 and 10 with no symptoms.

The case from India was a 35-year-old Indian man who arrived on Dec 9 and tested positive on that day with no symptoms.

The case from Kuwait was a former Kuwaiti soldier, 40, with an abnormal heart rhythm and a history of Covid-19 infection in September. He tested positive again upon arrival in Thailand on Dec 5. He was treated at a hospital in Chon Buri.

The Public Health Ministry also announced on Saturday that it had ordered every province to set up a Covid-19 emergency operation centre (EOC).

Apart from monitoring provincial situations, the centres have been instructed to prepare facilities, medical supplies and personnel in the event of an outbreak. They were also told to monitor cases of pneumonia and respiratory diseases.

Village health volunteers will visit households to raise awareness among people in communities and screen at-risk groups. Hot lines will also be set up for at-risk people to report themselves.

Health authorities will also closely monitor public places, especially entertainment venues.

Of the 4,192 people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Thailand to date, 3,915 (93.4%) have recovered, including 12 discharged from hospitals over the past 24 hours, and 217 people remain in hospitals. The death toll remains at 60, said the CCSA.

Global Covid cases rose by 702,513 over the previous 24 hours to 71.43 million. The worldwide death toll soared by 12,328 to 1.60 million. The US had the most cases at 16.29 million, up 246,530, followed by India with 9.82 million, up 30,034. Thailand ranked 151st.
