A distraught father said he gave his daughter 60 baht on Sunday to drive to school to rehearse a play with friends. Shortly afterwards, he got the phone call every parent dreads: His only daughter had died in a pickup truck crash while on her way to school and picking up a friend.

The driver of the Nissan Navaro said he saw her driving towards him while she was on the phone. He braked immediately, but she pulled into his lane on the dual carriageway and collided head-on with him, the Daily News reported.

Police Commissioner Chawanai Marasri and rescue workers rushed to the road from Udon Thani to Nong Saeng Ban Lupwai in the Muang district of Udon Thani.

The pickup had a badly damaged front end and the young girl’s red Honda Wave was lying nearby on the ground.

The driver said he was delivering jelly to Nong Saeng when he saw the teenager approaching him on the phone. A health care volunteer said it shows how dangerous it is to use the phone while riding a motorcycle.

Such behavior disrupts concentration, it said. The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
