The Bureau of Narcotics Control Board, ONCB, found 1,650 grams of heroin at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The heroin was hidden in a plastic-wrapped notebook, these were in a box with a shipping label to Australia. An investigation has been launched and officials have gathered evidence to find those involved in the case.

ONCB’s Wichai Chaimongkol reported that Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has ordered international drug groups to be tracked down. The airport’s customs department had received a report of a suspicious drug shipment to Australia on June 12, 2021.

Officials found 9 notebooks packed in 2 Thai postal EMS boxes. Both boxes have the same sender address. One was labelled at Samut Prakan Post Office and the other at Samrong Tai Post Office. The boxes have been seized and will be used in the prosecution.

Wichai said officials have been watching for suspicious shipments since October 2020. To date, there have been 19 shipments to Australia with drugs in them. Some examples are a box with 24.70 grams of crystal meth, a box with 61.04 grams of heroin and more. This case is the latest discovery and Australian police have received information about the recipient in their country.

During the Covid19 pandemic in which travel restrictions are imposed, officials continue to find shipments of illegal goods. This includes drugs, replica goods and more. Officials also found many illegal items brought in with travellers to be quarantined at the state’s quarantine centres. Some of these travellers have previously been caught committing similar crimes upon arrival in Thailand.

There are plans to install more X-ray machines that will be used to scan all passenger baggage at Don Muang Airport and Phuket Airport. By early 2021, a total of 23 machines had already been installed at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
