29 dead, 392 injured on the fourth day of the Songkran holiday

On the fourth day of the government’s traffic campaign for the Songkran holiday, 29 people were killed on the country’s roads.

According to the deputy. Under Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Khun Ansit Samphantharat, 392 were injured in 376 road accidents. This increased the total number of road accidents during the four days (April 10-13) to 1,465, with 152 dead and 1,494 injured.

The death toll on Tuesday was 29, well below the 54 road deaths on Monday. Speeding caused 36 percent of the crashes, followed by drunk driving (28%).

Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south had the most accidents (16) and the most injuries (17). The provinces with the most fatalities were Bangkok and Kalasin with three each. The province with the highest number of accidents during the first four Songkran holidays was Nakhon Si Thammarat at 65, and it also recorded the highest number of injuries (69).

Khon Kaen in the Northeast reported the highest death toll (8). At 1,913 main checkpoints across the country, staffed by 59,420 officers, 350,920 vehicles were stopped and 70,130 drivers were charged with various offenses – including 18,950 for driving without a license and 17,530 motorcyclists for not wearing crash helmets.
