8 people arrested during the first night of the curfew in Greater Bangkok

Last Monday, eight people were arrested for violating the first-night curfew in Bangkok and surrounding provinces.

As part of a partial lockdown, the Administrative Center for Covid19 Control in Bangkok and nine other provinces ordered a 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew last Friday. The other provinces are Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon, plus Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla in the deep south.

People are prohibited from leaving their homes between 9 pm and 4 am (except for emergencies) while inter-provincial travel is discouraged.

“On the first night of the curfew, 1,500 vehicles were stopped and checked and 2,183 persons were searched or questioned at 110 checkpoints in Bangkok and the surrounding areas,” the Metropolitan Police Bureau reported. “Officials have made a total of eight arrests, four related to possession or use of narcotics.”

On the first night of the curfew, police focused on providing information and warnings rather than making arrests, Bangkok police chief Phukphong Phongpetra previously explained.

“We will consider the intent of the curfew violators. They will get off with a warning this time if they are unintentionally outside at night,” he said.

The agency said the most common reasons for being out during curfew on Mondays were to deliver products (637 people or 29 per cent) and commute to and from work for the night shift (573 people or 26 per cent). Another 195 people (9 per cent) detained by the police were cleaning workers from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration who work at dawn to avoid traffic.
