A 31-year-old motorcyclist found a crying newborn baby in the early morning hours of this week, which had been dumped in a garbage can in Bang Kapi district.
Police later traced the mother, a woman from Myanmar, to work at a nearby grocery store. Both were immediately taken to hospital, police said.
Police and rescue personnel were called to a side street near the Chao Phor Sua Shrine on Happy Land 1 Road in the Khlong Chan area around 1:30 AM.
There, they found a newborn baby girl wrapped in a yellow towel in a red trash can, said Colonel Somprasong Raksakaew, crime-fighting chief at Lat Phrao Police Station. The baby was alive and well cared for.
Shortly afterwards, a police patrol arrested an exhausted-looking 30-year-old Myanmar woman who worked at a kha moo (braised pork knuckle) shop nearby. They questioned her and concluded that she was the baby’s mother, Thai media reported. The woman and the baby were immediately taken to Nopparat Hospital.
The aforementioned motorcyclist, Kittiphan Mongkholkitkun, told reporters that he came home from a market and parked his motorcycle. He heard a baby cry and went to watch the sound. He found a baby wrapped in a towel, head down, in a bin outside a store. He immediately called the police.
Colonel Somprasong, who led his police team to the crime scene, said he didn’t know how long the baby was in the bin or if she would survive. What he could do was pray at a nearby shrine for her safety. He was very happy that the baby and her mother made it to the hospital and that they were both in safe hands.
The police would question the woman, who would be charged correspondingly to this horrific crime, he said.
