According to a survey by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), most respondents believe the partial lockdown to contain the spread of Covid has not been successful.

The NIDA survey was done through telephone interviews between August 23 and August 26 with 1,312 respondents ages 18…and older. They had different levels of education, callings and lived all over the country.

When asked whether the lockdown was successful, 65% of the respondents answered with a bold “ no ”. Of that percentage, 36% said the lockdown was a complete failure because not every area was in lockdown and the measures were not strict enough, leading to an increasing number of infections. 29% responded that the lockdown was not too successful because not everyone fully complied with government measures and some people had not received a Covid vaccine.

27% responded that the partial lockdown was fairly successful because people closely followed government guidelines that reduced transfers. 6% of respondents said it was a great success because the restrictions on movement helped reduce infections. The remaining 3% did not answer.

When asked whether the lockdown should continue, 74% answered “yes”. Of that percentage, 26% said the lockdown should continue, but with stricter measures to prevent people from travelling and congregating. 26% said it should go ahead, but measures should be relaxed as some people have already been vaccinated. 21% said the lockdown should continue as it did as the measures were appropriate.

24% of respondents said the lockdown should be lifted. Their rationale was that the lockdown hampered residents’ ability to support themselves financially and that Covid is spreading anyway. The respondents added that the government should get quality vaccines for Thailand instead. The last 2% did not answer the question.
