In an effort to protect children from abuse, Apple will update its iPhones and iPad to detect and report images of child sexual abuse.

The mega-corporation pledged yesterday to implement new detection software to automatically flag all photos where children have been abused and exploited once uploaded to iCloud, Apple’s own cloud-based storage service.

Photos will be reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children after the update is launched that will change the operating systems of iPhones and iPad.

The ubiquitous tech company released a statement announcing its new plan to monitor photos on their devices and acknowledging that means of communication such as their devices are being used by predators to recruit and exploit children.

Apple wants to limit the distribution of child sexual abuse material by implementing this new automated technology.

They say they will be launching the detection as part of a suite of new tools for all their mobile devices.

Also, Siri, the personal AI assistant that comes with Apple devices, will be programmed to intervene when users search for terms related to child sexual abuse.

iPhone’s messaging app will also use artificial intelligence to learn to recognize dangerous messages and explicit or nude photos and send warning messages to the affected child and also notify their parents.

No specific release date has been announced yet. The use of AI and monitoring user actions and data is often controversial and raises the question of where to draw the line in the balance between public and personal security versus personal privacy for users.
