The Thai island of Phuket is ready to waive all restrictions related to Covid-19 for fully vaccinated tourists

Covid-19 screening measures for fully vaccinated visitors on Phuket will be lifted as of Sunday, May 1, according to an order from a committee chaired by the island’s governor, Narong Wunsiu.

The decision was made Tuesday during a meeting of the provincial infectious diseases committee, which was also attended by Phuket Deputy Governor Pichet Panapong, relevant officials, government agencies and private sector representatives. The meeting decided to adjust disease prevention measures to help the tourism sector by eliminating screening measures on Covid-19 for those visiting the province by land, sea and air.

Narong said the infection rate in Phuket has been analyzed, which shows a drop to 98 cases per day. He said more than 70 per cent of islanders have received a third dose of the vaccine and health services are well prepared.

The governor confirmed that while fully vaccinated visitors will be allowed to enter Phuket without testing requirements, unvaccinated visitors will still be required to undergo RT-PCR testing and comply with the Coronavirus Control Center measures.

Previously, travellers entering the province via Thai Pass were required to undergo an RT-PCR test upon arrival and book a room at a SHA Plus hotel for at least an overnight stay. Prior to that, stricter measures resulted in visitors spending seven days quarantined in the hotel.

“In addition to eliminating screening tests for Covid-19 for fully vaccinated travellers, the sale of alcohol in restaurants will be allowed until midnight from the current legal limit of 11 p.m.,” Narong said. He added that entertainment establishments that intend to operate as restaurants must first be evaluated by the provincial communicable disease committee.

“Phuket also has a ‘hotel room isolation’ scheme that allows those who test positive to stay in their original hotel and receive treatment in an isolated area,” he added.
