At least 94 killed in migrant boat disaster off Syrian coast

The death toll in the disaster with a migrant boat off the Syrian coast has killed 94 people, Syrian state television reported. Earlier this week, the death toll was 77, but bodies washed ashore again on Saturday.

At least twenty people on board survived the accident. According to the survivors, there were a total of about 120 to 150 people on the boat. The vessel departed from Lebanon for Cyprus on Tuesday morning. The boat is said to have sunk 45 kilometres north of the Syrian island of Arwad. The first bodies and survivors were found by Syrian fishermen. They have warned the authorities in the Syrian port of Tartus.

It is not clear how this accident could have happened. Reuters news agency reports that it is the deadliest disaster with a migrant boat from Lebanon to date. According to the Lebanese army, a man has been arrested who arranged the trip.
