Thailand’s notoriously dangerous roads may be getting a little safer. A new regulation just reported by the Expressway Authority of Thailand imposes new speed limits on highways across the country.

On the ground, the speed limit is set at 110 kilometers per hour, while on elevated roads the maximum speed is reduced to 100 kilometers per hour.

The new speed limit rules went into effect last week on July 22, but are now gaining attention as the EXAT publicly announced the new speed limits on all their channels via social media. But not everyone is happy with the new plan.

Many people have commented online criticizing the new limits, saying that motorists often pay tolls to use these highways to bypass traffic on local roads and get to their destination faster. Limiting their ability to drive at breakneck speeds would slow them down and defeat the purpose of paying a premium to get there faster.

The new traffic law allows regular four-wheel vehicles to travel up to 110 kilometers per hour on ground-level highways. School buses, public transport and trucks with a load of less than 2.2 tons are allowed to drive a maximum of 90 kilometers per hour.

Elevated highways now have similar rules, but slightly lower speed limits. Standard four-wheel vehicles are allowed to drive up to 100 kilometers per hour, while trucks of less than 2.2 tons, school buses and public transport are allowed to drive up to 80 kilometers per hour.

This change runs counter to a decision in May to increase the speed limit on four main arteries of highways in Thailand to 120 kilometers per hour. It was intended that the new speed limit would eventually be rolled out on all highways across the country. All arterial roads mentioned are four-lane highways or motorways.

These highways are:
– Highway No. 9 (Kanchanapisek), from Bang Khae to Mahasawat.A
– Highway No. 35 (Rama II), from Na Kok to Phraek Nam Dang.
– Highway No. 4 (Phet Kasem) from Khao Wang to Sra Phra.
– Highway 4 (Phet Kasem) Khao Wang to Sra Phra.
