Austrian man mummifies deceased mother to collect her benefits
Austrian police have arrested a 66-year-old man who kept the body of his mother, who died last year, in the basement in order to continue receiving her benefits.
The woman lived near the city of Innsbruck and was 89 when she died last June, Austrian police said. She probably suffered from dementia and would have died of natural causes.
Body fluids absorbed
Her son has admitted that he froze her body after her death last year to avoid odour nuisance. He then wrapped her in bandages to ensure those body fluids were absorbed, the police told the Austrian broadcaster ORF.
In the basement, he covered his mother’s body with a layer of cat litter, then kept it in a mummified state. He simply let her benefit continue, as a result of which he has unlawfully received 50,000 euros since then. He told his brother, who came by regularly, that their mother was in the hospital.
Postman gets suspicious
In the end, it was a postman who did not trust the case and called the police. The woman’s body was discovered on Saturday. Her son is accused of benefit fraud and hiding remains.
