Bang Sue health service identifies the scammer who sold vaccination appointments

The Bang Sue health department will file a police complaint against a telephone company employee who allegedly sold appointments for the free vaccinations at the Bang Sue Vaccination Center.

The suspect was identified after the Bang Sue Center reported that an unusual rush of appointments had taken place just after the centre closed, said Medical Services Department’s Somsak Ankasil.

The health department then contacted AIS, True, Dtac and NT — the four major cell phones that provide the booking service — to identify people who had purchased vaccination appointments, Somsak said.

“On July 28, about 100 of these people came to the centre. We let them in but cancelled their appointments immediately so they would come forward to complain. We then asked who they had contacted for the appointments. They said their contact was an employee of the cell phone company.”

The department and director of the Bang Sue centre passed the information on to the police and asked that charges be filed against the suspect.

Meanwhile, railway police are investigating seven volunteers in the centre suspected of facilitating the same scam, selling appointments for 400-1,200 baht.

Somsak said the health service is just looking for another scammer and will be able to track it down in a few days. He warned that if medics were involved in the scam, it would have serious criminal and ethical consequences.
