Bangkok adds new zebra crossing markings where a female doctor was killed last week

The city council has ordered new road markings to slow motorists at a crosswalk where a female doctor was killed last week by a speeding motorcycle.

The Metropolitan Administration of Bangkok sent road workers onto the streets to paint embossed white squares 50 meters on either side for the crosswalk where Dr. Waralak Supawat-Jariyakul was fatally hit by a heavy Ducati motorcycle.

The accident took place on Friday outside Bhumirajanagarindra Kidney Institute Hospital on Phya Thai Road.

The relief markings are intended to warn motorists to slow down. The workers also painted white squares on both sides of each of the three lanes in front of the pedestrian crossing to create the illusion that the lanes are narrowing.

Under a tree near where the doctor was killed, bouquets were laid to mourn the death of this 33-year-old woman.

A statistic released by the Department of Health shows that about six to eight percent of road deaths between 2016 and 2018 were pedestrians or an average of about 800 to 1,000 pedestrians killed each year in road accidents during the period.

The National Statistics Bureau said that about 2,500 to 2,900 pedestrians are involved in road accidents every year, and a third of them happened in Bangkok.
