Bangkok Announces Harsh Measures Against Lawbreakers During Songkran Festival!

Bangkok City Council has announced three strict measures to contain the Covid19 pandemic during the Songkran festival from April 10-15.

Lawbreakers can face imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or a combination of both.

The measures were decided by the capital’s Committee on Communicable Diseases and are intended to prevent a new outbreak of Covid-19:

  • Traditional Songkran activities such as religious ceremonies and devotion to the elderly can take place as usual. But any activity involving more than 300 people must be approved by the district administration.
  • Organizers of other activities, such as a banquet with more than 100 participants, must submit an event plan and measures to combat the disease to the district office. The event, unless approved, should be avoided in air-conditioned rooms.
  • Also activities with large groups of people that can lead to unrest, or activities with close contact, such as group meetings, water sprays, concerts or foam parties are strictly prohibited by the organizer.
  • Catering or being in groups should be avoided, prolonged eating and drinking should take place in an open area with good ventilation in a room, enclosed areas should be avoided.
