The city council has extended a closure order that was originally supposed to end on Sunday for another week. The reason for this is the persistently high number of coronavirus infections in the capital.

Governor Aswin Kwanmuang signed a new order yesterday extending the current policy, which applies to various shops and public places, until May 17

Locations affected by the warrant include schools, entertainment venues such as bars, pubs and nightclubs, and public parks, while shopping centres are allowed to stay open until 9 p.m. and supermarkets close an hour later.

One of the original sources of the pandemic’s third outbreak, Bangkok is part of a dark red zone that includes Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Chonburi and Chiang Mai.

The capital has topped the list with 16,917 infections since the new wave started in April and crippled the country. The new infections rose by 739 yesterday and by 869 on Thursday.

Infections in Bangkok skyrocketed this week after new clusters were discovered in crowded communities, including the Klong Toey district. Other high-risk areas are Bon Kai in Pathumwan District and Ban Khing in Bang Kae District.

The population affected by the extended shutdown has voiced their frustration on the city council’s Facebook account. Some complained that they should have been notified earlier so they could plan their deals. One of the most criticized measures was the ban on food in restaurants in the six dark red provinces, including Bangkok. Only takeout and delivery services are currently allowed.
