A reckless birthday party on the beach in Songkhla in violation of several Covid19 restrictions resulted in the arrest of 61 people, half of whom were also minors. Songkhla is a dark red zone, where any gathering involving alcohol is prohibited and non-alcoholic gatherings are limited to a maximum of 5 people.

The violation occurred on Wang Nao Beach in Songkhla’s Nath Thap sub-district, 61 people completely ignored the rules and met on the beach to celebrate a birthday. The group consisted mainly of teenagers and young adults who were seen drinking alcohol, partying and mingling on the beach. Many were reported to be enjoying an alcoholic drink, without masks or social distancing when Khuan Meed police arrived.

Many people were caught in the act—and no doubt many more will be arrested—gathering in secret for parties and events, but this group didn’t seem concerned about their violations. Music blared from parked cars in the neighbourhood while people partied and openly drank on the beach.

The governor of Songkhla confirmed the beach party events and said the party animals not only violated the national emergency decree but also violated the rules of the orders of the Songkhla Provincial Committee on Infectious Diseases and could be prosecuted on both counts. Violations of emergency decrees can carry up to 2 years in prison and fines of up to 40,000 baht.

The adults in the group were taken to Na Thawi Provincial Court to be prosecuted for their violations of Covid-19 restrictions. The governor hinted that he was furious about the beach party, which put the entire Songkhla community at risk, and warned that they could face the maximum penalties for their crimes.

Those who were minors will instead be sentenced by the Youth and Family Court in Songkhla Province. They will face similar charges and penalties for violating communicable disease orders and the emergency decree. The 30 partygoers who are under the age of 18 may also face additional charges for underage drinking.
