Biden calls for stricter gun law in TV speech: “Enough is enough”

US President Joe Biden has argued in a TV speech for much stricter gun laws in the US. “How many more massacres are we going to accept?”, the president said, among other things.

Biden also wants to ban the sale of assault weapons to private individuals. He also wants Americans who want to buy a gun to be more thoroughly checked and to raise the minimum age from 18 to 21 years. In addition, arms suppliers should no longer be protected from prosecution if their customers commit violence with their weapons.

“Enough is enough. We can’t disappoint the American people again. For God’s sake, how much more carnage are we willing to accept?” Biden said during the speech from the White House. He also called it “unscrupulous” that a majority of Republican senators do not support stricter gun laws.

The speech follows yesterday’s third mass shooting in two weeks. The racist terror attack in Buffalo was followed last week by the tragic shooting at an elementary school.

The cry for a stricter gun law is therefore getting louder, but it is not that simple to change that law. Biden and his party members do not have enough votes in Congress. A 60 percent majority is usually required to pass new legislation. The rural, sparsely populated states, where gun ownership is rife, still have disproportionate representation in the U.S. Senate
