The decomposing body of a missing 79-year-old Canadian man was found in a field behind a hotel in Pattaya just before last weekend.

The body, or at least what was left of it, was discovered in the grassy 10-rai field behind the Leelawadee Hotel in the Nong Prue borough, said Captain Phuttharak Sonkhamharn, deputy. Chief Investigator of Pattaya Police Station, who was alerted just after noon.

Police, tourist police and rescue workers at the scene said the rotting body gave off a foul stench. Police believe the man has been dead for several days, local media reported.

The officers found a white T-shirt and black pants near the body. They also found a bag containing 300 Canadian dollars (8,400 baht) and a Canadian passport bearing the name of the man, whose identity was withheld pending notification from family members.

Da Phromthung, 54 and a housekeeper at the Leelawadee Hotel said she went to the field to pick “morning glory” and noticed the smell. She initially thought it might have come from a dog’s carcass. But as she got closer, she was startled to see the human body. She immediately alerted the police.

According to the police, the staff of the Twin Resort Pattaya Hotel, about 500 meters away from the area where the body was found, made a report to the Pattaya police on July 12, his Thai girlfriend is said to be in Chaiyaphum, while the hotel remained and later mysteriously disappeared.

Police investigators examined closed-circuit video footage but found no clues until the find of the body was reported Friday. The body was sent to the forensic institute of the Royal Thai Police Office in Bangkok for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The detectives inspected the hotel and found that the man’s belongings were still in the room.

Thai media reported that police had called the man’s girlfriend in Chaiyaphum, telling her that her boyfriend had arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport on July 6 and had gone directly to Pattaya, sharing this sad story.
