Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died Friday at the age of 67 after an attack on him. That happened during a speech by Abe in the Japanese city of Nara.

Japanese news channel NHK reports that Abe was shot at around 11:30 a.m. local time. He was hit in the chest and neck. At the time of the attack, Abe was addressing voters on behalf of the Liberal Democratic Party about next Sunday’s Senate election. A 41-year-old man has been arrested as a suspected gunman. It would be a former soldier named Yamagami Tetsuya.

It is not clear what the motive was for the attack. According to NHK news channel, the suspect told police that he was not happy with Abe and that he planned to kill him. Kyodo news agency, on the other hand, reports that the suspect “held no grudge against Abe’s political beliefs”.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has now aborted his election campaign and is on his way to the capital Tokyo. Political parties have also stopped campaigning. It is not yet clear whether the elections will take place this weekend. “It is such a despicable and barbaric act that took place during an election period, which is the foundation of democracy. It is totally unacceptable. I condemn the act in the strongest possible terms,” Kishida said in a statement.

Shinzo Abe was Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 and from 2012 to 2020. At the end of August 2020, he announced his resignation due to health problems. However, he remained active within his party.
