Chiang Mai police have arrested a British man after allegedly threatening a monk with a machete.
Police said the man armed with a machete quack to Wat Eranthawan in south Chiang Mai and confronted the monk with the melee weapon last Sunday, the startled monk managed to escape and called the police.
Camera images seemed to show the man waving the machete in the temple.
The day before yesterday, officers at Hang Dong Police Station arrested the 50-year-old British man in a house in Nam Phrae district after a four-hour standoff.
Police said they found a small amount of cannabis in the man’s Toyota car. His visa also turned out to have been overstated.
The man has been charged with possession of drugs, trespassing on private property, criminal nuisance and visa violation.
His motivation for confronting the monk with this violence is not known so far.
