Mary-Sophie Harvey was drugged at the end of last month after her last competition at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest. She announced this in a post on Instagram. Just before this incident, she and her compatriots won the bronze medal in the 4 x 200 meters.

I’ve never been so ashamed in my life.

Mary-Sophie Harvey posted on Instagram that she was drugged after her last swim at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest. The swimmer says that she suddenly became unconscious. The last thing she can remember is that she went out for a drink to celebrate the last game. “But from that moment on I don’t remember anything. There is a gap of about four to six hours of which I don’t remember anything,” says the swimmer. “The first thing I remember after the evening is waking up confused with the team manager and doctor next to my bed.”

The people around her have told Mary-Sophie what they know about the evening. Some of these people were very judgmental. “I can only say one thing: I have never been so ashamed in my life,” writes the swimmer on Instagram. She doesn’t think this shame will ever go away.

The day after the incident, Mary-Sophie flew home and ate with her parents. Her mother said during dinner that she looked different. “I also felt different ,” says the swimmer in her Instagrom post. “It felt like the body I was in was not mine. And it still is.”

When she came home after dinner, she found bruises all over her body. “Friends told me afterwards that they carried me home when I was unconscious. This probably explains the bruising, but it still didn’t make me feel better.” Mary-Sophie shares photos of some of her bruises. “I have a few more in other places, but I’d rather not share this one.”

After Mary-Sophie came home, she went to the doctor. Here it became clear that the swimmer also had a broken rib and a minor concussion. “The doctor told me I was very lucky that I got away with these injuries.” Mary-Sophie wants to emphasize with her post that she is not the only one who has experienced such a bizarre situation. “A dangerously increasing number of cases have been reported over the years, but are still under-talked ,” she says. “As a result, it is still difficult for victims to find help or they are condemned by bystanders.”

In her Instagram post, she closes with an important message for anyone reading her story: “Please be careful. I thought I was safe and this would never happen to me. Especially not while surrounded by friends. Yet it happened to me.” and I wish someone had told me about this growing problem before this infamous night.”
