Chiang Rai government official arrested for disposing of 13 million baht intended for disabled Covid19 patients

An official in charge of finance at the Ministry of Social Development was arrested Sunday for stealing 13 million baht intended for Covid19-affected disabled Thai people.

The commander of the Anti-Corruption Division, Police General Charoonkiart Pankaew, said 41-year-old Pisal Sukjaitham was arrested on a warrant of fraud in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai.

The ministry has filed a complaint at the Phaya Thai police station accusing Pisal of pocketing money earmarked for helping people with disabilities suffering from Covid19 virus. The case was later heard by the Anti-Corruption Division.

The ministry took action after a budget of 13 million baht was transferred to one of his personal bank accounts

The newspaper report did not specify when the crimes were committed and police gave no further details about the man’s detention in Mae Sai.

General Pankaew only stated that the suspected man was probably trying to flee to Myanmar. Phaya Thai police chief Colonel Bowornpob Soonthornreakha said Pisal denied the allegations.

He has been sent to the Anti-Corruption Division for further questioning. Police plan to forward Pong’s case to the Central Criminal Court for corruption and misconduct this week.
