The family of a 20-year-old student who died on Thursday, 10 days after his first vaccination with the Sinopharm vaccine, will receive an initial compensation of 400,000 baht.

The payment was confirmed yesterday by provincial health chief Narinrat Pichayakamin as compensation for death after vaccination.

The unfortunate Surachai Orsapanich, a freshman studying hotel management at Ramkhaemhaeng University, died of heart failure Thursday morning at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital in the main district.

The young man had received his first dose of the Sinopharm Covid19 vaccine on October 4 at The Mall shopping centre in the main district. The Nakhon Ratchasima city office provided the vaccine to the local population for free.

Dr Narinrat said an inactivated vaccine-like Sinopharm’s can normally cause fever, pain and fatigue, but the deceased student had developed severe diarrhoea and went into shock.

Surachai’s uncle, Pichet Ponsanoi, said that three days after receiving the injection, his cousin developed diarrhoea, vomited, lost his appetite and began to shiver.

On Monday he had severe diarrhoea and was only half-conscious. He had been taken to the sub-district hospital that referred him to Debaratana Nakhonratsima Hospital.

Around 2 a.m. Thursday, Surachai went into shock and then coma. He was taken to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, where he died the same morning.

Pichet said the young man’s parents had died when he was a child and that his 70-year-old grandmother had raised him. He had no underlying illnesses. He was perfectly healthy and worked to provide his grandmother with money and pay for his studies, Pichet said.

Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Wichian Chantharanothai said Friday that he has ordered local doctors to investigate Surachai’s death.
