Couple finds a 1 million baht pearl in their oyster in Thailand

A young Thai couple was shocked when they feasted on seafood at a local barbeque restaurant and found a rare gem worth more than 1 million baht in one oyster in an oyster.

Sittidate Chaiwan celebrated the birthday of his girlfriend, 27-year-old Patjariya Gatip, when she nearly swallowed an expensive Melo pearl at a restaurant in the northern province of Payao.

Sittidate said that his girlfriend Patjariya was eating grilled spotted Babylon snails when she chewed something very hard. She spat it out and discovered a round orange stone that looked like a pearl. A friend who was dining with the couple joked that they might be millionaires because the stone resembled a Melo pearl.

Sittidate googled the internet for more information about the stone and was shocked to discover that genuine Melo pearls cost more than 1 million baht.

The 26-year-old sent the gem on August 19 to be tested at Chiangmai’s testing lab. The lab later confirmed to him that the stone was indeed a genuine Melo pearl.

The excited boyfriend immediately announced that anyone interested in purchasing the pearl can contact him through his Facebook account, Pound in’Dy. His friend Patjariya hopes this will put an end to her money problems and says she will use the sales money to pay off her family’s debt.

A Melo pearl has a natural pastel orange color and comes from a very large sea snail called Melo Melo or Indian volute. It is one of the rarest and most expensive pearls because it can only be found in one in a thousand snail shells.

A Melo pearl can be found in the seas surrounding just four countries, Myanmar in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, Vietnam in the South China Sea, Thailand in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, and Cambodia in the Gulf from Thailand.

The price of a Melo pearl is generally worth about US$200,000 to US$250,000 or between 6 and 7.5 million baht. Melo pearls come in different shades from light yellow to orange, the orange pearl being the most expensive.
