Death toll in South African bar rises to 22, cause of death still unknown

The death toll from the incident in a South African pub has risen to 22. The cause of death is still unknown. Most victims are between 13 and 17 years old.

The pub is located in the coastal town of East London. Previously, there was talk of oppression because there would have been panic in the pub, but because the bodies show few injuries, further investigations are underway. Poisoning is not excluded. The bodies were found on tables, chairs and on the floor.

The young people celebrated the start of the school holidays in the pub. People gathered en masse outside the pub. Family members are asked to help identify the victims.

The South African president has expressed his concern about the conditions under which the young people could gather in the pub. East London Mayor Xola Pakati called the incident “similar to a massacre” and a 17-year-old local resident told Reuters news agency that everyone wanted the pub closed because they sell alcohol to minors.
