Despite the recent and worst wave of Covid19 infections peaking almost every day, Thailand is well on track to reopen on Oct. 15 to foreign travellers who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The launched “Phuket Sandbox” model is to serve as a pilot project for the nationwide reopening plan. Next on the list is the “Samui Plus” travel model, which will launch on July 15.

Addressing the nation 2 weeks ago, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced the plan to fully reopen Thailand within 120 days, regardless of whether most people have been fully vaccinated.

“We can’t wait for a time when everyone is fully vaccinated with 2 injections to open up the country or when the world is free of the virus. We have to be willing to live with a certain amount of risk and try to keep it at a manageable level and enable people to make a living again.”

To prepare for reopening and address the Covid19 situation, the Thai government plans to release 10 million Covid19 vaccines every month from July. By early October, nearly 50 million people, or at least 70% of the population, would have received at least their first dose of the vaccine.

With Covid-19 cases still on the rise, particularly in Bangkok, many Thais have criticized the prime minister for travelling to Phuket in the sandbox model to reopen, especially given the record number of Covid-related deaths in recent days.
