The historic Saratoga hotel in the centre of the Cuban capital Havana was partly destroyed by an explosion on Friday. At least 22 people were killed and 74 were injured.

After the explosion, a fire started in the building. Rescuers and emergency services searched the rubble for victims. According to the Cuban authorities, the first investigation shows that the explosion was the result of a gas leak.

“It was certainly not a bomb or an attack. It is a very unfortunate accident,” said President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who is on the scene with Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz.

Images are circulating on social media showing that a large part of the facade has been knocked away. Located 100 meters from the parliament building in Havana, the luxury hotel is one of the city’s best-known hotels. Due to the pandemic, the hotel was closed but would reopen in a few days.
