Dozens killed in church fire in Cairo suburb
Several people have been killed in a fire in a church in a suburb of the Egyptian capital Cairo. It is not yet clear how many victims are involved. Reuters news agency reports that at least 40 people have been killed.
There would have been a short circuit in the Abu Sifinkerk, a Coptic church. There was great panic when the fire broke out. Many people would have been overrun as a result. The fire service has now brought the fire under control.

“I am closely following the developments of this tragic accident, ” President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi wrote on Facebook. “I have instructed all relevant government agencies and institutions to take all necessary measures to address this accident and its consequences immediately.” He also extends his condolences to all the families and relatives.
Several media are calling it one of the worst fires in Egypt in recent years. In the country, safety standards and fire regulations are poorly observed. Last March, 20 people were killed in a fire at a clothing factory near Cairo.
