A 35-year-old man welding in the middle of a roadside workshop died after a drunk driver crashed into the workshop in Phan Thong district with his pickup truck.

Phan Thong Police were informed of the accident at a shop at 3 Soi Baan Gao in Baan Gao Sub-district.

Police and emergency services arrived on the scene to find the body of 35-year-old Apirak Somrak from Buriram. He suffered multiple injuries to his skull and arms and was believed to have been killed almost immediately in the accident.

Nearby, first responders found three damaged pickup trucks, a sedan, and a motorcycle.

Jutarat Sonraksa, 46, told that she was Khun Apirak’s girlfriend: “My friend (Apirak) was a welder who worked for the shop, where he worked. A pickup truck driver lost control in a nearby bend and killed my friend in the workshop after rambling into three other vehicles. My friend didn’t see this coming because he had his back to the road while welding.

The driver of the pickup was later identified by police as 28-year-old Surakit Panggao, who was described by police as heavily intoxicated. Police conducted an alcohol breath test that officers said was over the limit, although they did not release the exact BAG (Blood Alcohol Content) to reporters.

Surakit was immediately taken into custody and was unable to give a statement due to his advanced state of intoxication.

Police said the driver is charged with drink-driving, which resulted in death and damage.
