The Special Interventions Service (DSI) agent who hit the hostage-taker outside the Apple Store in February is not being prosecuted. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced this today.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, an investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Department has shown that the agent’s intervention was justified. The officer would have acted appropriately and hitting the hostage-taker was an “effective intervention”, according to the Public Prosecution Service. “By his actions, he immediately put an end to a very life-threatening situation for the hostage and the police officers who were stationed behind his service vehicle.” Because the hostage-taker may have been carrying explosives, according to the Public Prosecution Service, it was not an option to use a service weapon, for example.

In February of this year, a man entered the Apple Store on Leidseplein in Amsterdam and held a customer at gunpoint for hours. The hostage-taker demanded 200 million euros in cryptocurrencies and was wearing what looked like a bomb vest. The hostage situation ended when the hostage managed to run away. The hostage-taker ran after him, after which the DSI agent hit him. The hostage-taker eventually died of his injuries in hospital.
