The Thai Daily News reports that electricity costs will break the barrier of 5 baht per unit for the first time.

Spokespersons for the provincial power plants attribute the increase to the high cost of the gas used to generate electricity.

They quoted sources from the Energy Regulatory Commission as saying that the FT rate can change from September to December, meaning the unit price will hover around the 5 baht limit for the last four months of the year.

The FT rate used to calculate the fees will be announced at the end of July before the end of the year.

The biggest problem is the rising cost of imported gas used to supplement the natural gas produced in the Gulf of Thailand.
