Employees manage to escape in Thailand in the nick of time after a summer storm collapses the building like a house of cards

This is the terrifying moment when a warehouse collapsed, trapping two people in it after being hit by high winds from a tropical summer storm in Thailand.

The incident was recorded by security cameras when heavy rain hit the oil storage building in Lopburi province on April 20.

Emergency services rushed to the warehouse, but the roads were blocked by trees uprooted by the storm. There were also flash floods over the area and lightning strikes.

Rescuers eventually reached the collapsed building and freed two workers trapped under a pile of metal plates that had fallen from the roof. Both were taken to safety.

56-year-old warehouse manager Khun Maneerat Panya said: “This was the worst storm I have ever experienced in my life. When the building was destroyed, I realized there were two more workers inside and immediately called the rescue service for assistance.

Kunakorn Jaemphokul, 34, a worker, said my heart has never been pounding like this, I heard my friend yelling to get into a car. Fortunately, we just escaped by car before the roof collapsed.

The storm caused widespread damage across the region.

A seven-year-old girl died after being struck by lightning while trying to find shelter for her three dogs.

Local government officials said the damage to the warehouse and other buildings would cost the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair.

The Thai Meteorological Service warned that thunderstorms and gusts of wind came from the low-pressure area that covers the upper part of the country and the westerly and southwestern winds that brought moisture from the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia are approaching their tropical monsoon season. Rising temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunderstorms, lightning, rain and flooding.
