Ferrari’s Leclerc wins dramatic F1 season-opening Bahrain GP

Max Verstappen was unable to finish the first race of the season. After a long battle in Bahrain between Leclerc and Verstappen for first place, the Dutchman’s Red Bull had to stop the race two rounds before the end.

The battle between Lecrerc and Verstappen was fascinating from start to finish. The Dutchman overtook the Ferrari a number of times in the first part, but each time Lecrerc managed to return fairly quickly. In the last part of the race, Verstappen was able to get closer to Leclerc due to a safety car, but the Dutchman was already complaining about problems with the car. In the end the car broke down completely two laps before the end and not much later his teammate’s Red Bull also retired, leaving Verstappen’s team empty-handed.

Lecrerc already took pole position during qualifying yesterday, while Verstappen started in second place. It then became clear that Ferrari would become Red Bull’s biggest challenger at the moment. The second Ferrari, of Carlos Sainz, finished third in qualifying and second in the race.

Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen’s main competitor last season, finished third due to the retirement of the Red Bulls. Yesterday during qualifying it became clear that the Mercedes is struggling with some problems. Hamilton only started fifth and his teammate, George Russell, started ninth.

Next week, Verstappen will have another chance to take points during the GP of Saudi Arabia.
