Horrific scenes last weekend and a huge fire ripped through a row of shops near Bangkoks Sampeng Market, destroying six units. At the time no casualties had been reported.

The 199 emergency centre warned rescue units about the fire. Reports state that the fire had started in a three-storey building and then spread through other buildings in the near.

The building where the fire started is near the pier on Ratchawong Road. The fire brigade quickly arrived and managed to bring the blaze under control, although the rubble on it was smouldering.

Sampheng Market is located in a very populated area in Chinatown in Bangkok. It is known for its open-air Sampheng Market, where street stalls sell everything from clothing to household items and souvenirs. The area is also known for its traditional Chinese medicine pharmacies.
