First cruise ship from Europe enters Thailand

The Norwegian ship Viking Mars called at the port of Samui Island in Thailand with 636 tourists on board, spending 2 million baht on the first day of the visit

The M.V.Viking Mars cruise ship became the first European vessel to arrive in Samui in three years since the Covid-19 epidemic began in Thailand, as well as around the world. The ship called at the island’s port on Sunday, November 27, bringing ashore 636 passengers, mostly U.S. and Australian citizens.

The ship is accompanied by 470 crew members. The ship sailed from Piraeus in Athens, Greece, on Oct. 25 and made stops in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore before arriving on Ko Samui in Thailand.

The first group of tourists bought tickets for day trips to popular tourist attractions such as the Wat Phra Yai and Wat Laem Suwannaram temples and seafood restaurants on the resort island. Some of the passengers went to Phangan Island and Ang Thong National Marine Park. Others visited souvenir stores and restaurants near Na Thon Pier.

Supakan Yonchun, director of TAT’s Samui office, said the arrival of the M.V.Viking Mars brought about 2 million baht to the island on the first day of the visit.

At the Na Thon boat dock, the ship was greeted by a solemn group of welcoming officials and officials from the Tourism Authority of Thailand office. The long-awaited foreign guests were presented with warm smiles and souvenir kits in appreciation of their visit to the Sunshine Kingdom.

The cruise ship Genting Dream from Singapore arrived in Phuket on November 23. The ship anchored off Patong Beach, bringing 3,000 passengers for a brief visit to the island province. Among the guests arriving were mostly Singaporeans, Malaysians, Indians, Indonesians and Taiwanese.

The ship, which is on a five-day cruise from Singapore, made a stop in Penang Island, Malaysia, before arriving in Phuket. Visits to Langkawi and Port Klang, serving Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are also scheduled on the return trip.

The 335-meter Genting Dream has 18 decks and 1,674 rooms, which can accommodate 3,352 passengers.
