Pattaya’s nightlife patrons have urged the government to reopen bars and re-allow the sale of alcohol and only close places where cases of coronavirus have been found.

Prinn Panitchpakdi, vice chairman of the Democratic Party and director of the Association of Nightlife Operators, sent a letter to House President Chuan Leekpai on June 18, outlining the industry’s demands.

The federal government called for an immediate end to general closure orders and said only places where Covid19 infections can be traced will be closed and workers will be quarantined for 14 days. In general, general bans would have caused major economic damage.

He called on the government to lift the ban on the sale of alcohol in restaurants and bars, as health officials have not even shown that alcohol consumption is linked to the spread of the coronavirus.

Finally, the group called on the government to accelerate its Covid-19 vaccination campaign.

Damrongkiat Pinitkarn, secretary of the Pattaya Entertainment & Tourism Association, said he personally believes bars in provinces with high Covid-19 transmission rates, such as Bangkok, should not be allowed to reopen.

However, in areas with a low case count, such as Pattaya and Chonburi, locations should be reopened and closures should only be targeted at businesses to which cases can be traced.

He said many entrepreneurs have been encouraged by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s pledge this week to reopen Thailand without restrictions within 120 days but fears the deadline will not be met if his government fails to inform the public quickly. enough to be vaccinated. Last Friday, less than 3 per cent of the population was fully vaccinated.
