Foreign man steals one bottle of rum worth 150 Baht from an elderly woman’s shop in Buriram

A son of a house went online to complain about thieves constantly targeting the grocery store he runs with his mother. Wiranit and his 67-year-old mother, Thongdaeng, operate a 24-hour shop on Phosri Road in central Udon Thani, working in two shifts.

Earlier in the week, Mom was in charge of the store that mainly sells alcohol and cigarettes. But she was sleeping. The son was at home.

The mother was awakened from her sleep by the sound of an open closet. It was a foreign man, bald and quite overweight, carrying a black shoulder bag.

He stole a “baen”, or half a bottle of saengsom, worth about 150, 160 baht at most.

CCTV footage confirmed that he was riding a red and black women’s motorcycle and wearing a black helmet. Wiranit said people were always stealing from them, especially taking advantage of his mother’s age when she was in the store.

He said the thieves were mostly all Thai – now a foreigner would steal from them. They don’t want to file a report with the police, because they don’t want to shake things up.

Wiranit told the media that he had a message for the foreigner: ”You are a farang and live in Thailand. I won’t report you, but neither should you.”

Mama Thongdaeng was more direct: “Just come back and pay for the drink,” she said.
