A Thai woman intending to go shopping in Pattaya found herself at the centre of a bizarre story after she claimed to have been arrested by fake police and held in a dog house while being extorted for 50,000 baht.
The woman was reported missing by her mother on Monday after not coming home from the Wingene, today police have arrested 4 men and accused them of posing as police officers.
Pattaya police raided a site near a farmer’s cockfighting facility where 3 pit bulls roamed as guard dogs amid a number of dog houses.
The unnamed woman said the men who took her into custody pretended to be police and pulled a black bag over her head as they took her to the site full of chickens and dogs. While it was not revealed what crime the fake police had charged her with, she said they kept her in a dog house and told her she would be released for 50,000 baht.
The fake cops told her that if they took her to police headquarters, where the punishment for her crimes would be much heavier and more expensive. The next day, the victim tried to get her foreign boyfriend’s money, but only got 16,000. baht. The men who held her hostage agreed to let her go for that prize.
Yesterday, police searched all of the alleged cockfighting sites in the area and discovered the location the woman said had been held along with several other inmates. In the course of their investigation, police discovered 2 additional victims, one of whom identified the fourth member of the gang who had been arrested after the original report identified only 3 men.
Further investigation revealed that one suspect is a former Thai naval officer and police suspect there are more perpetrators posing as police officers as part of this gang. Police also believe there may be many more victims of the fake cops. The Pattaya Police Department is asking anyone who believes they are being targeted by the gang to file a report at the police station.
