So far, four men have been charged with posing as police officers to kidnap a woman for ransom in Chonburi.
Pattaya police arrested the four men earlier this week and named them Pakornkiat Saengpraewpraw, 28, Santi Chanthong, 37, Sukchai Horthongkham, 34, and Natthapol Treesuwan. The detectives are also looking for another suspect, Somphong (name unknown), who has fled.
Police said the gang — some of whom have been former Royal Thai Navy personnel — have allegedly kidnapped people, in the same way, several times before. All their victims had something to do with drug trafficking.
The mother of the latest victim said she notified police after a ransom was paid and her daughter was released.
According to Nidapan (name withheld), her daughter had gone out to buy beer on Monday when a woman dropped a pack of drugs in front of her. Immediately two men came up to her and asked her whose package it belonged to. The men identified themselves as police officers before taking her to a house where they locked her in a cage guarded by guard dogs.
The mother also told the press that three other women had been detained in the same place.
