Grieving Hungarian widow turns out to have been living illegally on Koh Samui for more than 10 years

Surat Thani’s immigration police have arrested a Hungarian woman after an inspection revealed she had been illegally living on the island for more than 10 years after her husband’s death.

Ms Angelika Edina Balla has reportedly admitted that she entered Thailand on November 30, 2009, to travel before her visa expired in February 2010.

After her visa expired, she moved with her husband to a beachfront rental house in Bo Phut District and helped him run a business on the island.

When her husband passed away earlier, officials checked her passport and found that she had been living in Thailand for 4,165 days since the date her visa expired.

Ms Balla was arrested yesterday and is now facing a possible lifelong ban from the country she called home for more than a decade.
