Group of men in southern Pattani arrested for posing as police officers to extort locals

Five men posing as police officers in southern Thailand’s Pattani province were arrested yesterday. The suspects allegedly extorted money or property from drug addicts or teenagers.

Yaring Police were warned that men portrayed themselves as members of Yaring Police in a village in Laem Pho Canton.

The Thai newspaper “The Nation” reported that the men were dressed as police officers and wore police badges on their chests. The men reportedly chose local teenagers or people using narcotics as their extortion victims.

The fake police would ask residents if they could inspect their belongings and sometimes extort them for money or property. Police have since arrested the five men.

Just last month, a man from Bangkok was arrested after allegedly posing as a police officer and raping sex workers more than 40 times over a six-month period.
