Thailand’s health minister has ruled out further easing of Covid-19 restrictions, despite reports yesterday that the CCSA is considering such a move. According to a Thai newspaper article, Anutin Charnvirakul praised the country’s handling of the pandemic, including the rollout of the vaccine.

It was reported yesterday that Opas Karnkawinpong of the Department of Disease Control said Thailand must move on and learn to live with the virus, similar to other countries where restrictions are being relaxed or lifted altogether. Not so fast, says Anutin. However, the health secretary has acknowledged that despite new cases of 10,000 a day, Omicron has resulted in less serious illness and the situation is manageable.

Anutin goes on to say that hospitalizations and deaths from the virus are declining as more people are vaccinated. Overall, he thinks the government has done a great job in managing Covid-19 and claimed he’s not alone in saying so.

“I recently had a conversation with the US Ambassador to Thailand about the situation surrounding the coronavirus. He said one thing is clear in Thailand’s actions is that we provide information in a transparent and straightforward manner. We also expect the people to help the government to prevent and control the epidemic. We are therefore making the information fully public in order to raise public awareness and understand the situation. We make vaccines available on time, efficiently and safely according to plan.”

According to media reports, Prime Minister Prayut Cha-o-cha will chair a meeting of the CCSA next Friday, where officials are expected to discuss the easing of some Covid restrictions so that some activities can resume and a measure of normalcy can return.
